Lapu Lapu

A King's Balisong by Pabu Knife

Pabu cut a window into the latch itself so that the mechanism can be seen. A small spring in the latch pushes down on a small pin which is in-line with the beam of the latch. That pin presses on another pin perpendicular to it which rides in a channel milled in the handle. Remember, you can click on the picture to see a high-res version of it. (SPECIAL FEATURE: click here to see a VERY high-res version of this key picture, at 2.7MBytes, it's provided for study and enjoyment by serious connoisseurs) The latch itself is made of Jim Ferguson Damascus. Notice the careful details on the tip of it. On a Heros and Kings knife, no detail is neglected. Most balisong latches are T latches. U latches are also common. Pabu has already invented two new latches, the I latch and the L latch. This, their third, is really a form of T latch. But, it's unique enough that it needs its own name. It's being called the R latch. Pabu invented it, and Lapu Lapu is the first released balisong to have it. I don't usually do much bragging myself in these exhibits, and, in this case, all credit for inventing, designing, and making the totally new and innovative R latch goes to Pabu. But, this latch is about 3/4 of an inch (about 19mm) long and the spring and pins are even smaller. Bringing it to you in pictures so clear is something I'm just a bit proud of myself.
