Three Balisongs By Ralph Turnbull

The final of these three is a grand finale indeed. Mr. Turnbull tells me that this is one of the best balisongs he's ever made. The handles are covered completely in outstanding Snakewood. Snakewood is one of the most beautiful woods, but it's also one of the most difficult to work with.

The blade is a nice sort of up-swept bowie. At first glance it appears to have a profound hammon line . But, upon closer examination, you can see that the wavy lines of the Damascus steel pattern don't cross that line.

This blade is actually made from two pieces of steel that have been fused side-by-side. That's not a hammon line, that's where the two pieces of steel join. The spine of the blade is made from Damascus steel. The edge is made from a high-carbon steel that takes and retains an excellent edge. The result is the best of both worlds. This is a very difficult and unusual technique. In fact, this is the first balisong knife I've seen with such a blade.

In addition to the beautiful Snakewood and the unusual blade, Mr. Turnbull has enhanced virtually every nook and cranny of this latchless balisong with extensive filework embellishment.

Yes, this truly is an outstanding balisong knife from an outstanding maker. It's just the sort of thing you'd expect to find here... in the Balisong Collector's Vault.

Mr. Turnbull is accepting orders for new custom balisong knives as well as other types of knives. His custom balisongs start at about $400. You can contact him via his website linked below.
