Daguhoy
A Hero's Balisong
by Pabu Knife
Daguhoy is the latest edition to the Heros and Kings Collection
which Pabu Knife of Portland, Oregon began earlier this year with
Lakandula, a balisong knife which has since become a
legend itself.
Pabu continues to use their art to honor the proud traditions
of their native Philippines, and the courage, the strength, and
the independence of her people with Daguhoy, a balisong
fit for a great warrior and a great leader and yet which, with
its flowing carving, captures the spirit of a gentle wind.
The flowing spearpoint blade with its pronounced fuller is ground
and carved from Jim Ferguson Twisted Nickel Damascus Steel.
The Fancy Pivot screws are also hand-made entirely of Ferguson
Damascus.
The Beautiful handle inserts are Devin Thomas tri-color Mokume-Gane.
Mokume-Gane is a Japanese term. It means, "Wood-grain metal." The color
and pattern are NOT painted on or some other sort of surface finish. No. The
pattern and color are part of the metal. They go all the way through.
The making of Mokume-Gane is historically a Japanese art and it dates to
about 1650AD. To this day, it remains a very difficult art and not widely
practiced. Devon Thomas of Panaca, Nevada is one of the acknowledged
greatest masters practicing today.
Notice that even the special screws that hold the inserts into the
handles are Pabu-made of Ferguson Damascus. The Pabu-exclusive L-latch
is also made of Ferguson Damascus. Even the screw holding the latch is
Pabu-made from Ferguson Damascus.
The Mokume-Gane inserts are held by essentially Chicago-Screw-style
fasteners which are screwed in from inside of the channel handles.
However, there still remains the challenge of how to install those
fasteners. For that, Pabu actually build a special fixture and tools.
